The Upchurch Wedding Venue in Cary, NC

The Upchurch is one of the most distinctive and sought-after wedding venues in the Raleigh–Durham area. Located in Cary, North Carolina, this beautifully restored historic property perfectly blends timeless Southern charm with modern elegance, creating an unforgettable setting for weddings and celebrations. From the moment you arrive on the property, there is a sense of warmth, sophistication, and intentional design. As the Upchurch wedding photographer, I enjoy each and every wedding at this beautiful venue.

Surrounded by several acres of manicured grounds, The Upchurch offers a seamless combination of indoor and outdoor spaces that allow couples to create a wedding experience that feels both elevated and personal. One of the venue’s most iconic ceremony locations is the Magnolia Lawn. It’s a lush outdoor setting framed by mature magnolia trees and natural greenery. The open lawn creates a romantic atmosphere for exchanging vows while also providing a stunning backdrop for portraits and candid moments throughout the day.

Inside the venue, The Conservatory serves as a bright and modern reception space filled with beautiful natural light. Its clean architectural lines and neutral palette make it an ideal setting for elegant receptions and timeless wedding photography. The light-filled interior creates a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that photographs beautifully from every angle.

The historic Main House adds another layer of charm and intimacy to the property. It offers beautiful spaces for getting ready, quiet moments before the ceremony, and relaxed portraits throughout the day. The character of the home elevates the wedding experience, making every part of the venue feel inviting.

The expansive patio and surrounding grounds provide additional versatility for cocktail hour, outdoor gatherings, and golden-hour portraits. As the sun begins to set, the property glows with soft natural light, creating the perfect environment for romantic and artistic imagery.

The combination of clean natural light, elegant architecture, thoughtfully designed spaces, and versatile scenery allows for an elevated and editorial approach to wedding photography. Every corner of the property offers opportunities for timeless portraits and authentic storytelling, making it one of my favorite wedding venues near Raleigh, NC.

Team Collaboration

As the Upchurch Cary Wedding Photographer, I appreciate when the wedding vendors work together to bring the wedding couple’s vision to life! Teamwork is extremely important during special events like weddings. The vendor team Kelly and Jordan chose for their big day made this wedding a dream!

The Upchurch planning team made sure the day ran smoothly, going above and beyond. They provided exceptional planning and event management. In addition, they made sure the timeline stayed on track, and the couple could remain present throughout their celebration. I admire these ladies for their dedication to making every client’s day absolutely exceptional! Not to mention they are a joy to work with! The Rocky Top Catering never disappoints, and the service and delicious food were top-notch. Curated Events supplied the beautiful rentals. Scotty, with Making Memories DJ, made sure everyone was on the dance floor! Every Bloomin’ Thing did the flowers for this spring wedding, and they did an amazing job. Mae’s Beauty Bar made sure the ladies looked absolutely stunning. Last but not least, my amazing second shooter and I made sure to beautifully capture this lovely day!

Getting Ready

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at The Upchurch is how beautifully designed the getting-ready spaces are. The bridal suite is spacious, elegant, and filled with soft natural light, creating the perfect environment for timeless wedding photography. From capturing details like the wedding dress, invitations, and heirloom jewelry to documenting emotional moments shared between the bride and her bridesmaids, every corner of the space photographs beautifully.

The groom’s suite offers a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere where the groom and groomsmen can spend time together before the ceremony.

These quieter moments often become some of my favorite candid photographs of the day. Laughter between friends, final touches before walking down the aisle, and the anticipation leading up to the ceremony.

First Look and Portraits

The Upchurch offers several stunning locations for a private and intimate first look. You can choose between the patio, the seasonal gardens, and the charming porch overlooking the property. Each space provides a romantic backdrop while still allowing couples to feel tucked away from the excitement of the day.

I often recommend a first look because it gives couples the opportunity to spend intentional time together before the ceremony. Additionally, it allows portraits to feel more relaxed and natural. It can also help ease nerves and create a smoother timeline for the rest of the day. At the same time, I always honor each couple’s personal vision and preferences. Whether couples choose to see each other before the ceremony or wait until the aisle moment, there is truly no right or wrong decision. The most important thing is creating a wedding day that feels authentic and meaningful to them.

This couple chose to do a first look, along with all of their bride and groom portraits and formal family photographs, before the ceremony. It was important to them to enjoy cocktail hour with their guests and spend as much time celebrating with family and friends as possible. Their timeline allowed the day to unfold naturally and gave them the freedom to fully enjoy every part of their wedding celebration.

Ceremony

The Magnolia Lawn at The Upchurch provides a breathtaking setting for wedding ceremonies of all sizes. Surrounded by lush greenery and mature magnolia trees, it creates a romantic atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting. Kelly and Jordan exchanged vows surrounded by nearly 200 of their closest family members and friends, making the ceremony feel incredibly joyful and full of emotion.

During every ceremony, my goal is to capture not only the key moments between the couple but also the reactions and emotions unfolding among their guests. Some of the most meaningful photographs often come from those candid in-between moments. For example, proud parents holding back tears, guests smiling through emotional vows, or the laughter shared during heartfelt exchanges. These genuine interactions help tell the complete story of the wedding day in an authentic and timeless way.

Having a second photographer is also incredibly valuable during this part of the day. It allows us to document the ceremony from multiple perspectives simultaneously, ensuring comprehensive coverage of one of the most important moments in a couple’s life.

Cocktail Hour

While guests enjoyed cocktails on the porch and throughout the historic home, I focused on capturing candid interactions and the joyful energy of the celebration. Cocktail hour is often one of the most relaxed and social parts of the wedding day. I love documenting the hugs, conversations, laughter, and meaningful reunions happening naturally throughout the space.

Toward the end of cocktail hour, I made my way to The Conservatory to photograph the beautifully designed reception details. It is important to capture the decor before guests enter the space. From the elegant décor rentals by Curated Events Raleigh to the floral arrangements, wedding signage, and carefully styled tablescapes, every detail reflected the couple’s vision and added to the elevated atmosphere of the evening.

Reception

From the grand entrance to the final dance of the night, my approach to reception photography blends candid storytelling with thoughtfully composed imagery. I document the energy, emotion, and celebration as it naturally unfolds. I include heartfelt toasts, joyful tears, spontaneous dance floor moments, and the quiet interactions in between.

One of my favorite parts of any wedding day are bride and groom portraits during golden hour, if the timeline allows. The soft evening light (every photographer’s dream) at The Upchurch creates an incredibly romantic setting. These moments often become some of the couple’s favorite photographs from the entire wedding gallery. Relaxed, joyful, and full of connection, portraits beautifully captured the feeling of the wedding day in its most genuine form.

The event ended with an electric dance party to the tunes of Making Memories DJ. The dance floor was full all night, and you can see below how much fun the guests had. When it comes to photographing dancing, I focus on capturing the fun through candid photos. I also focus on creating more artistic images. As you can see below, intentional motion blur shows the emotion, energy, and atmosphere creating that popular cinematic look. DJ’s lights can add to the fun, motion-focused photos.

Bride & Groom Who Trusted My Vision

One of the things that made this wedding at The Upchurch so special was the incredible trust the bride and groom placed in me throughout the entire day. From the very beginning, they fully embraced my creative approach and allowed me the freedom to document their celebration in an authentic and artistic way. That level of trust is something I never take for granted, and it always leads to the most meaningful imagery.

They were relaxed, present, and genuinely excited to collaborate, which made the entire photography experience feel seamless and natural. Because they trusted my vision completely, we were able to move effortlessly through portraits, candid moments, and editorial-inspired scenes. I made sure that nothing felt forced because that would show in the photos. Their connection, joy, and emotion came through organically in every frame.

As a photographer, those were the moments I loved most at this Upchurch wedding. The couple simply enjoyed their day while I focused on creating timeless images that reflect their story honestly and beautifully. You can truly see that trust reflected throughout their final gallery.
